Made in the U.S. of ...China?

The FDA has reported several complaints since 2007 about chicken jerky treats manufactured in China, dogs have become ill and for some it has even proven fatal. I had not heard of these complaints until last week when the story circulated again on the internet and so for the last two months we have been feeding Charlie the Welcome Home Chicken Jerky treats available at Centinela Feed. From the first bite we knew he was hooked, the minute the bag came out he would make a beeline for his bed and sit patiently waiting for his favorite treat. He has never become ill from the treats, but after reading the FDA report we were naturally concerned. I scoured the back of the package, but found no information about where the treats were manufactured, so I called the number listed. A very kind customer service representative confirmed that the treats are in fact manufactured in China, but she tried to assure me that the plant is inspected regularly and that they have never received any complaints from customers. We decided that although we have had no issues, we will no longer be giving Charlie the treats. Anyone who followed the news this past year is aware of all the appalling recalls to come out of China, from toys to tainted milk, so for me it was a no brainer.

Now the hard part: finding something to replace Charlie's favorite tasty treat. After 20 minutes in Centinela Feed yesterday it quickly became apparent that all brands of Chicken Jerky are manufactured in China, along with a great deal of other dog treats. We finally settled on some flavored milk bones, which he seems to like although it's no jerky. Later in the day while running errands we stumbled on a small local pet store where we found some promising candidates. I selected a bag of dehydrated sweet potatoes which have a similar consistency to the jerky, fingers crossed that Charlie feels the same.

Thank you for the very informative post. We used to buy our chicken strips from Costco, but discovered they were made in China. We switched to the Centinela Welcome Home Brand which didn't say it was made in China, but was much more expensive. Now we know better. Any ideas if the chicken strips from the online catalog Dr Smiths is from China too?

Thanks for reading! I'm fairly certain the Dr Smiths are made in China as well, after finding out that the Centinela Feed brand were made in China I researched every chicken jerky I could find and was unable to find any that were definitively made in the US, so we gave up on it. I think the only safe way is to dehydrate your own chicken for homemade jerky.

Thank you for your post. I also have been feeding my dog, Moby, these Welcome Home Chicken Jerky treats as he goes bananas for them. This morning I woke up to one very sick Moby. Poor thing. I feed him a high quality diet, but he gets this chicken first thing in the AM. However I think this may be the reason he is so sick this morning. It's the only thing he ate yesterday (he didn't eat his dinner). Then I read this article:

Anyway, found your blog post and i thought the Welcome Home chicken was made in the USA. Regardless, it seems like a bad thing. No more for Moby.

Hi glad I could help and I hope Moby feels better! I actually just this week finally discovered chicken jerky treats that are made in the US, they are the Trader Joe's brand and it's clearly printed on the label made in the USA, Charlie and I were both ecstatic to find them!

Hi! Came across this blog as my husband and I are always looking for chicken jerky made in the US. We use to live in San Diego and there was a pet store that only sold US made products but haven't found one in Orange County yet. Googled Welcome Home Chicken Jerky and didn't find where it was from either. Glad I came across your blog.
The pet store we use to shop at went online for the jerky products (all made in the US)- after Mochi (our dog) had these he won't have any other kind.
Here's the link to the jerky- http://purefectpet.com/cart.php?m=search_results&catID=&shopByPrice=&venID=&search=
and the link to the store: http://www.yelp.com/biz/wholesome-choice-pet-market-san-diego-2

Thanks for your post!

Thanks so much for this blog. I was googling the Welcome Home Treats to re-order after finding them at Centinela (I live in Palm Springs). I was under impression that they were manufactured in the US. That's great news on Trader Joes carrying an alternative. Can you also share the name on the dehydrated sweet potato? I worry about giving too much protein in my dogs diet. Thanks!
